      I.         COURSE TITLE:  Office Management                                                            

    

     II.                Catalog Description:  2006 – 2007

 

Current Description: Introduces scope and responsibilities of administrative office management. Topics include planning organizing, operating and controlling office operations; leadership and human relations factors; and an overview of the effect office technology has had on the business world including telecommunications, reprographics, office systems, records management, data processing, word processing and voice processing. A-E-W/3 credit hours. No prerequisite.

 

Proposed Description: This course introduces the role and responsibilities of the administrative office manager and explores the various areas that comprise the administrative office management function. Broad topics include the managerial process, management of the office environment, management of office employees and office systems, and management of office functions.

 

III.             Course Goals:  (main concepts, principles, and skills you want students to learn from this course).

 

The purpose of this course is to provide a means for students to develop an understanding of the role and responsibilities of an administrative office manager.

 

IV.              Outcome Behaviors:  (what you expect students to do in order to demonstrate that course goals were achieved – expected learning occurred). 

 

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

 

A.     define the functions of Administrative Office Management, taking into consideration the evolutionary nature of the broader field of management.

 

B.     discuss the key elements of an organizational structure including line, function, committee, product, and matrix structures and centralized and decentralized authority. 

 

C.     demonstrate the use of effective administrative communication including electronic communication, traditional letters, memoranda and reports, as well as listening, and conducting meetings and conferences.

 

D.     design an effective environment for an office area including furniture, equipment and general ergonomics.

 

E.      develop effective programs for hiring, motivating, developing, supervising, and appraising the performance of office employees.

 

F.   plan a job analysis program, adopt an appropriate job evaluation method, and prepare a job specification document.       

 

G.  design effective strategies for measuring employee output, improving employee productivity, and administrating salaries.

 

H.  use various types of application software and the Internet to complete office projects and solve problems.

 

I.    explain the steps in the problem-solving process.

 

J.       discuss the principles that guide administrative office managers in preparing budgets.
