BA25 (BUS 117)

 

 

I.          COURSE TITLE:  Business Communications

 

 

II.        CATALOG DESCRIPTION:  2004 – 2006

Principles of business communication as they relate to the contemporary business organization.  Emphasis on management approaches and solutions to communication problems unique to the business community.  Topics include word/information processing, employment communication and effective preparation of business correspondence and short reports.  Resume writing and resume posting marketing yourself for the job search will be explored using the internet.

This course is designed to provide an opportunity for students to develop an understanding of Business Communication Principles.  The student will explore communications in the new electronic world of work.  Students will be trained to compose appropriate and accurate business letters, memoranda, short reports, and emails.  Training of report planning and research on and off the net will take place.  Presentation software such as Powerpoint will be introduce and short oral reports will be required.

 

Through Business Communications students will:

A.        develop an understanding of the theories and principles of business communication.

B.        develop an understanding of sundry business communication tasks such as planning conferences and conducting business meetings.

C.        acquire skills necessary to write effective letters and memoranda

            using a psychological business approach.

D.        acquire skills necessary o write formal and informal business reports.

E.         manage data and use graphics to enhance written communication projects.

F.         develop an understanding of the principles involved in listening, nonverbal, and cross-cultural skills.

G.        practice effective techniques for creating, presenting and follow up oral presentations.

H.        apply ethical and legal guidelines when making communication decisions.

I.          become familiar with the terminology and benefits of electronic

communication technology as it relates to the efficient formatting of letters, memoranda, reports, and employment postings.

J.         develop the ability to recognize and utilize formal and informal lines of communication in business organizations.

K.        become familiar with computer visuals. An introduction to Powerpoint will train students to produce multi-media presentation working in a team environment.

1.         Powerpoint slides used to open chapter discussion and reinforce chapter concepts.

2.         DVD/Videos-available with most textbooks can be used to show students how business leaders communicate effectively.

3.         Study Guides- students should be encouraged to use study guides if necessary to review grammar and master most frequently misspelled words.

4.         Instructional Software-used to give students the opportunity to practice hands-on applications with practical exercises and immediate feedback.

5.         Equipment

            a.         Computers-used for hands-on exercises

            b.         Overhead Projectors – available for transparencies

            c.         Television VCR/DVD – available for vendor and other v   visuals

                                    d.         Powerpoint slides and Microsoft applications used to

                                                discuss students projects and reinforce concepts.

                        6.         Evaluation Encompass:

                                    a.         Tests covering textbook material, class lectures and

                                                activities, and outside reading.

                                    b.         Writing assignments including letters, reports and

                                                memoranda.

                                    c.         Role playing to reinforce skills needed for employment

                                                interviewing, planning and leading meetings, working

                                                in a team environment.

                                    d.         Short oral reporting on various written assignments/or

                                                projects.

            A.        BUSINESS STRUCTURES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  (5 HOURS)

                       

                        1.         Sole proprietors, partnerships and corporations

                        2.         Start up details

                        3.         Human resources management and employer responsibilities

                        4.         Internal Revenue Service tax guides for new businesses

                        5.         New York State tax guide for new businesses.

 

                       

            B.        ACCOUNTING PROCEDURES & RECORDKEEPING (9 HOURS)

 

                        1.         Cash receipts and payments records.

                        2.         Ledgers and work papers.

                        3.         Adjusting entries.

                        4.         Payroll records.

                        5.         Bank reconciliations.

 

            C.        COMPLIANCE REPORTING                                            (15 HOURS)

 

                        1.         Payroll forms 940, 941, NYS-45, W-2 and W-3

2.         Schedules C and SE for sole proprietors.

3.         Form 4562 for depreciation reporting.

4.         Forms 1065 and IT-204 for partnerships

5.         Forms 1120-S and CT-3-S for S corporations.

6.         Form ST-100 for New York State sales tax.

 

 

 

 

D.        FINANCIAL STATEMENTS                                  (4.75 HOURS)

 

                        1.         Compilation reports

                        2.         Income statements

                        3.         Balance Sheets

                        4.         Cash flow statements

                        5.         Business plan

 

 

            E.         EVALUATION OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE   (3.75 HOURS)

 

It is strongly suggested that there be at least three (3) full period examinations, four (4) small projects and one (1) major project.  The examinations could include short answers, forms completions, and essay questions.

 

The Business Administration and Accounting Department endorses the college’s “Writing to Learn” initiative and strongly recommends that a writing component be included in all business and accounting courses.
