I.        COURSE TITLE:  Retail Buying & Merchandising

 

II.      CATALOG DESCRIPTION:  2006 – 2008      

Presents basic knowledge of the buyer’s role in department store and chain operation.  Involves a study or resources, buying techniques, and relationships with resident buying offices.  Attention given to such merchandising data as prices, markdowns, stock turnover, markups and planning of stocks and purchases.  Prerequisite:  BD63 

 

 III.      GOALS OF  THE COURSE

 

This course is the second course retailing students will take in their program.  It introduces them to the complexities of the buying, merchandising and the selling of goods and services, to final consumers the primary objective of this course is to introduce students to the knowledge and skills needed to perform in the profession of retail buying.

 

IV.       STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME

 

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

 

a.                   have an awareness of what is necessary to perform in a merchandise career.

b.                  have an understanding of the buying and selling of merchandise.

c.                   know and be able to use business terms which are applied to the field of buying and merchandising. 

d.                  have and awareness of the buyers role in department store and chain operations. 

e.                   be able to identify the latest utilization of computer technology in retail buying. 

f.                    understand the factors that go into merchandise pricing.

g.                   have an awareness of the different resources available to buyers.

h.                   be acquainted with resident buying office relationships.

i.                     understand the buyers role in planning advertising and promotions.

j.                    have an awareness of consumer behavior as it affects retail buying plans.

k.                  understand the role of research as a buyer’s aid to merchandise planning.

l.                     understand fashion as it relates to buying.

 

The primary objective of this course is to introduce students to the knowledge and skills needed to perform in the profession of retail buying.

                        

V.      SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS/INFORMATION FOR TEACHER:

 

A.                 Prerequisite to the course:  BD63- Retail Principles

B.                 Programs requiring this course:

a.       Retail Business Management:  A.A.S. Degree

b.      Retail Business Management: One Year Certificate

C.                 This course can also be used as a BD Business elective in those programs requiring these electives or as an unrestricted elective.

D.                 Courses which required this as a prerequisite or corequisite:

a.       BD69 – Retail Management Problems

E.                  External Jurisdiction:  None

F.                  SUPPORTING INFORMATION:

Students are introduced to periodicals such as “Stores” (published by NRF.), “Chain Store Age,” “Discount Store News” and the Women’s Wear Daily.  They will also review the use of the internet as it is related to e-tailing and explore the vast resource pool of information available to business men and women.

VII.      It is recommended that faculty create a student centered learning

environment, including the use of groups, student presentation and the liberal use of computers.  It is recommended that faculty integrate computer technology in their teaching methodology, including web based assignments.

 

 

The Business Administration and Accounting Department endorses the college’s “Writing to Learn” initiative and strongly recommends that a writing component be included in all business and accounting courses.
