As the chairperson of the College-wide Freshman Seminar Advisory Committee, I am writing to invite you to join the teaching team of freshman seminar (OS15), a cross-curriculum course required for first-year students at Suffolk County Community College. This is a great opportunity to provide your future students, from their first day at college, with college survival skills through academic and career goal orientation. At the same time, this is a unique way to broaden your own professional and teaching skills by applying your unique expertise outside your content area.
Freshman seminar, offered by an overwhelming majority of institutions of higher learning in the United States, promotes academic competence, identity development, civil responsibility, career decision, and personal wellness; in the process, it helps first-year students succeed in fulfilling their educational and personal goals.
OS15 has a rich history at Suffolk. The advisory committee is now launching a call to recruit more full time faculty members, particularly those who are relatively new to the college, to join this truly rewarding team--a perfect way to fulfill the responsibility of serving the college community. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, OS15 relies completely on voluntary participation of faculty and staff from the whole college community.
Please contact me if you have any questions and watch for Vice President Canniff’s College Brief in April, announcing the one-day teaching certification training. At this session, you will learn all the facts about OS15 and the resources available for teaching this essential course.
I encourage you to apply as soon as possible and look forward to welcoming you to the freshman seminar teaching team.
