Dr. Richard Wright began teaching full-time at SCCC in 2002. Prior to SCCC, he earned a doctorate in Orchestral Conducting from Northwestern University in Chicago. His Master's degree is also in orchestral conducting from Brigham Young University, with his undergraduate degree in Music History and Literature from Northern Arizona University.
Dr. Wright has years of experience as an orchestra conductor. While in Chicago, he was Music Director for three years of the now-called Sherwood Academy Orchestra, and also was a guest conductor for the Lakeshore Symphony Orchestra and the Northshore Chamber Orchestra. He is currently the director of the Bay Shore Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Wright also has experience in conducting and performing in stage works, such as those of Sondheim and Gilbert and Sullivan. He has worked also as a choral conductor of community ensembles for many years, and studied choral conducting formally while in Utah.
As an active pianist, Dr. Wright has accompanied singers, instrumentalists, choirs, and has performed within orchestras and symphonic bands for many years. He has also done some composing and arranging in all aspects of his musical career.
His most important priority at SCCC is as the Musical Director and Conductor of the College Orchestra, and the program has grown significantly under his direction. Students and faculty alike share un their appreciation for his efforts.
He and his wife, RuthAnn, are the parents of two sons, Ethan and James.
