Incoming Freshmen  

Congratulations and welcome to the Nursing program at Suffolk County Community College!

You are about to embark on a remarkable journey toward an exciting and rewarding career!      
Here are some helpful hints to start you on your way!

STEPS TO SUCCESS:

·         Know your program!  Carefully review the appropriate student handbook:
    STUDENT HANDBOOK – RN Program
    STUDENT HANDBOOK – PN Program

·         Get organized!  Use effective time management skills.

·         Know yourself! Understand your personal learning styles and habits.

·         Rally support! Family, friends and fellow students contribute to your success.

·         Guard your personal resources!  Don't forget to sleep, exercise, and eat properly.

·         Learn to say NO!  Delegate tasks and non-essential activities to others.

·         Stay calm!  Stress and anxiety will not get you an A!  Establish control & balance.

·         Enjoy learning!  Be an active learner.  Always keep your ultimate goal in mind.

·         Believe in yourself!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO GET DONE NOW:  

Get your Uniform – Review the dress code in the student handbook and required supplies.  Order your name tag early! Don’t forget to purchase your school patch from your campus bookstore.

CPR certification – This American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider certification must be completed by the first day of class.  Bring your card and 2 copies.   Long Island Rescue Services has frequent and conveniently scheduled classes    http://www.lirescue.org/

Physical examination – This must be completed by the first day of classes. Bring 2 copies. See the homepage link to FORMS to download requirements

Complete a background check – Required of all nursing students in order to attend clinical rotations.  Complete the application at:  http://www.mybackgroundcheck.com/

Obtain textbooks and course readings – Check the list of required textbooks for your classes at your campus bookstore.  Some instructors may also send a letter prior to the semester with instructions about course readings to complete for the first day of class.
